Finishing up Ulduar

December 29, 2009 at 6:14 pm (Raiding)

My guild has been decently strong in 10 mans; we have cleared through ICC and have even gotten Northrend Beasts down in ToTGC. But we have yet to down Yogg.  When 3.2 came out we just kind of gave up running into Ulduar. This has changed recently. We really want to get the full clear and to do that we need to down the Yoggster.

So last night we start on Mimiron (we had cleared up to him earlier in the week). It is such an easier fight and only took us two tries with many people who had not done it before. Then comes wonderful General V. I swear the worst part about that fight is the running back to it on a wipe and we did wipe a few times. This was a new fight for a few of the guildies who came along and we had a few issues on those silly life leeches. We wiped 3 times in which we were fighting for a good few minutes yet it didnt seem like we didn’t even make a dent. Finally, something clicked and he stopped getting healed up. After making it look so hard for an hour we somehow made it look exceptionally easy. Here are some notes I made for myself as a resto.

-Wild Growth is just great on this fight when there are multiple range. I just have to remember to wait while the ranged assemble themselves on the shadow crash puddle then heal efficiently.

-Trust your other healer. We were doing this with me and a pally healer. The first few tries I would try to keep the tank hotted with rejuv at least to assist the other healer. i found it easier to save my heals and just go heal the tank while the pally was looking for the green cloud.

-Finally, let the HOTS do the work. I know it is difficult to see people with 25% health knocked off but the rejuv will heal them enough if I let it. I was only using Regrowth when clearcasting was active.

We had just enough time to try Yoggster 3 times before we called the night. unfortunately we had those wonderful phase one issues where there were adds all over the place. Getting used to this phase will come with time. We were only able to push into phase 2 once and that was with 3 adds still up. I don’t think we had one attempt in phase one where at least 4 extra guys were spawned :-(. We have extended the raid ID and hopefully I will be writing later this week about Yoggy finally being defeated. Maybe I’ll even try to take a video of it. I do enjoy this fight because no one is being carried.

December 28, 2009 at 8:59 pm (Resto Druid Mechanics)

Woo hoo two posts in one day I must be really bored at work.

I would like to discuss the biggest change to resto druids since 3.3 which is haste. Every since the gift of the earth nerf all I see in druid blogs is “go get more haste”. I am curious if I am one of the few who really does not see it? I do notice that my timing is a little off because of the haste nerf. But not enough where my healing is really suffering. I am not going to go into equations and numbers but more the feeling of it. In the long run we are losing around .3 s on casting time which is not make or break at the moment. I am not going to lose my raid healing ability from that because I don’t just roll rejuvs, I’m a bit more situational.

I have read I still like stacking spellpower more on the gems because it make my heals bigger and stronger. Am I wrong to go this route?

First Saurfang Encounter and fun for Druids of all kinds

December 28, 2009 at 8:45 pm (Raiding)

I finally was on when my guild attempted Saurfang the other night and got to attempt some new and exciting things.

One observation I noticed was that this fight is harder than the 3 previous by a large margin. Lord Marrowgar is utterly easy after the multiple nerfs to make tanking easier. Lady Deathwhisper is easy once DPS understands who they are supposed to attack. The ship fight while fun is easiest of all i think. On any of these boss fights our group did not take too many attempts to understand and beat.  Then comes the tiny guy.

This guy is small and does not look imposing at first glance. Even after he begins to attack the tanks its not very bad.  We had a good setup each and every time. Then those silly adds just created havoc. It is not the add’s damage but trying to stay away from them while healing/dpsing and at the same time staying away from your fellow raiders.

It got to the point where I got to try out my non-geared boomkin spec to include some typhoon for crowd control. We began to do better, but DPS was bad (probably because I was doing an awful 1500 DPS). I think our best attempt was 10% or so.

I do have a new respect for boomkin and think I will try to seriously duel spec for it in the future. I will write about my boomkin progression after I get some practice.

Healer Survey from Miss Medicina.

December 21, 2009 at 4:14 pm (Uncategorized)

Here is my first post, so I might as well use the questionairre from Miss Medicina to talk a little more about myself.  Miss Medicina

What is the name, class, and spec of your primary healer?

Mondka, Resto Druid

What is your primary group healing environment? (i.e. raids, pvp, 5 mans)

I mainly heal during 10 mans currently. I enjoy 5 mans also because there are less people to heal :-). I do 25 mans on a sporadic basis. Coming from 10 mans, when I see 25 people all losing life on my raid frames I kind of freak out sometimes.

What is your favorite healing spell for your class and why?

Rejuv, rejuv, rejuv

It’s the spell I use the most as a raid healer. Also I always have time to give the tanks some HOT love. Wild growth I would say is my second favorite because its heals multiple people and because of the sound it makes. When I hear that sound I know there is healing being done. Lifebloom is nice because it saves tanks sometimes by giving them a heal at the perfect moment. Also, some fights are great for lifebloom if you time them right (Loetheb, Koralon)

What healing spell do you use least for your class and why?

Tranquility, I just forget about it sometimes.

What do you feel is the biggest strength of your healing class and why?

One thing is that we never run out of mana. We also have great resources to give mana to other healers in need. Also, our HOTS are just great to prepare for incoming damage.

What do you feel is the biggest weakness of your healing class and why?

I think druids are a strong class overall. We don’t have very big heals like a Pally. Swiftmend and Nourish work just fine though.

In a 25 man raiding environment, what do you feel, in general, is the best healing assignment for you?

Raid healing all the way. Druids excell at healing multiple targets at the same time. We can also HOT up tanks to assist the tank healers out.

What healing class do you enjoy healing with most and why?

I like healing with two other classes. One is the Pally because I know that big heals are going out when needed and I don’t worry when i see huge health swings on the tank because I know the Pally has it. The other is a disc priest. This is because they mitigate damage so well. I love seeing raid and tanks not taking huge damage spikes because we had a good Disc priest laying nice little protective barriers around them.

What healing class do you enjoy healing with least and why?

I think Shamans just because I don’t know much about their healing styles. Though I am a big fan of chain heals.

What is your worst habit as a healer?

Refreshing Rejuv to early on a target. I find that when I get to excited and damage is gonig crazy I tend to just throw rejuvs up all over the place. During that time I may use rejuv 3 times on 1 person in the span of 6 secs. This usually happens when I am first learning a fight and don’t have full understanding of the damage that people will take.

What is your biggest pet peeve in a group environment while healing?

DPS who take more damage then they should. This includes people standing in fire for two long so they can finish a cast, people standing in front of the boss, or people running all over the place to the point where I have to run all over the place to find them and heal them.

Do you feel that your class/spec is well balanced with other healers for PvE healing?

Yes, I think helaers are pretty equal nowadays. We all bring some special utility to the raid, but not to the point where only a certain kind of healer is needed on a fight.

What tools do you use to evaluate your own performance as a healer?

This is difficult because recount really isnt a strong indicator of healers. I find that if everyone lives I am happy. I do also look at my activity during a fight to see if I pressed enough buttons :-).

What do you think is the biggest misconception people have about your healing class?

I think some people forget we have don’t have many big heals in us during a fight. One example is Lord Jaraxxus and the incinerate flesh mechanic. When we first began to do this fight it was the raid healers job to get rid of the Debuff before time expired. As a druid I would rejuv switmend and nourish a few times to get rid of it. This took a long time and made it difficult for me to get the legion flames people also.

What do you feel is the most difficult thing for new healers of your class to learn?

I think new druids have difficulty gettign used to using rejuv the majoriy of them time. The spell doesnt throw out huge instant numbers , but it does heal very effectivly over time. I can always pick out druids who arent utulizing their heals fully on the twins fight. I would look back at their recount and lo and behold they used nourish the most.

If someone were to try to evaluate your performance as a healer via recount, what sort of patterns would they see (i.e. lots of overhealing, low healing output, etc)?

They would see that I press lots of buttons. If I am not pressing a button then I feel as if I am missing something. Also as a druid healer im usually at top of HPS, especially in heavy raid damge fights. My patterns are tough to distinguish sometimes. I find that I do use every spell available to me during a fight (minus tranquility) and quite often.

Haste or Crit and why?

It would haveto be haste now after 3.3. The haste cap has been raised for us.

What healing class do you feel you understand least?

Resto Shamans are just enigmas to me.

What add-ons or macros do you use, if any, to aid you in healing?

Grid and click are my favorites because as a lefty I find it easier to use the buttons on the right hand side of keyboard. clique helps with this. I also enjoy the other addons for grid. Thos include the boss debuff grid addon and the HOT tracking grid add on. I have just begun to use power auras because I wasnt using my 245 trink CD much at all.

IDo you strive primarily for balance between your healing stats, or do you stack some higher than others, and why?

I love Spellpower. It makes my rejuv tick for more.
